Reflection:
I researched this artifact in my Multimedia class ITEC 7445. I have always been fascinated with iPads, and not having one of my own, I wanted to know more about educational applications of iPads in the classroom setting. This paper discusses the way many schools are using iPads in all grade levels to assist with all content areas. This technology is especially good for ELL students and students with learning disabilities, as I discovered in my research.
Interestingly, I was able to use this Emerging Technologies paper at the very beginning of this past year to write a grant, called the Cobb County School District Promising Practices Grant. This grant was looking to give a large sum of money to the school who could come up with the best instructional innovation to use in the school for that school year. In the body of grant proposal, we had to come up with a problem that the innovation would remedy, and we had to come up with the research to support why our innovation would work. We had to define the outcomes that we anticipated, and we had to create a timeline and plan for implementation. We also had to determine what resources were needed to implement the project, and we had to provide a specific budget outline for financial resources along with an explanation of any non-financial resources. Finally we had to explain how this project could become sustainable, by coming up with a plan for tracking outcomes and sharing those outcomes with others. My paper provided the plan, the research, the financial information, and the motivation that we needed to write an excellent proposal. Although our grant proposal was not ultimately chosen, I was able to put what I had learned into action, and take the lead in writing a sound proposal. As a result of this assignment, I was able to illustrate my acumen in researching, recommending, and implementing policies, procedures, programs and funding strategies to support implementation of the shared vision represented in my school. As it turns out, later in the year, when we came into some additional Title I money, my principal invested in iPads to accommodate two additional classrooms with innovative technology! I feel I contributed a little to that decision.
As I look back, I feel I chose an excellent topic for my emerging technology research, however, I would have liked to do a little more research on future prospects for iPads. Since my initial research, Apple has gone through two more iterations of the iPad, and I would have liked to have included some predictions of the direction I might have seen Apple going with their iPad technology.
While the compelling work that I did on my iPad research did not initially contribute to school improvement impact, the fact that we ended up investing in 40 iPads for this next school year is as a direct result of my involvement in the process. Teachers and students alike will love having access to iPad technology in their classrooms, and as for impact assessment, the jury is still out. However, if my research is sound, these iPads in classrooms will increase student engagement and hence, student achievement in years to come.
