Reflection:
This artifact was brought about by studying diversity, cultural understanding, and global awareness, and by acknowledging how technology can have such an incredible impact on these ideas. As a result of our classroom discussions and related readings, I composed a blog entry addressing this impact.
This artifact demonstrates mastery of Standard 4.3, because in the blog entry I address the myriad ways digital tools and resources can support diverse student needs while also enhancing cultural understanding and increasing global awareness. When the world is now at the fingertips of all who wish to explore the far reaches of her mysteries, it is very easy to celebrate diversity of this magnitude.
From this artifact and the study which preceded its creation, I was able to acknowledge how easy it is to tap into the wisdom of the ages using technology. As I mentioned in my article, we can now
communicate globally with people around the world. We can reach out in seconds and connect with classrooms anywhere, anytime. We can share what we know and we can learn from the cultures of others. We have tools like e-Pals and telementoring sites to share our insights and get our questions answered. We have on-line mechanisms like Voicethread and Podcasts, Wikis and Blogs, to present what we know and pose our queries. We can broadcast our biographies and blog about our boredom. We can podcast our politics and screencast our dreams. We can tweet and tag and text and google. We can even whisper in wikis. (Diversity and Technology, 2012)
From this artifact, I was able to ponder and learn the significance of the power we are sharing with our students as we explore all that technology has to offer. I was able to appreciate how much our students crave the excitement that we can bring into our very classrooms of a world burgeoning with information, answers to questions, and wisdom of the ages. As for improving the quality of the artifact, I always believe that the more time we are given to research ideas, the better off we will be in the long run. If there are any changes in course design, one I would make is to spend more time in research related to diversity, cultural understanding, and global awareness. Give time to explore what this looks like in the classroom, and devise ways to embrace these concepts in the classroom. If I were to add to my artifact, it would be to create applications for my explorations into these concepts.
The work that went into this artifact has a direct impact on student learning. As I become more aware of cultural and global diversity and design lessons around embracing this diversity, so my students come to experience the same. This opens up their thinking and broadens their perspectives, making them extraordinary critical thinkers. Their ability to think critically and nurture their awareness of social justice becomes evident in how they work together and the kinds of products they produce.
